Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidenced based psychotherapy for treating the impact of trauma as well as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It follows a protocol of steps the client is guided through. Everyone responds to EMDR in their own unique way and as your therapist, I will follow your lead on how fast or slow to proceed.

In the field of mental health trauma is defined as an acute event where you think you might be hurt badly/killed, such as a car crash, an active shooter event, a severe weather event. And, or, it can be chronic exposure to traumatic events such as abuse and neglect in childhood, repeated exposure to violence in the line of work for first responders and health care workers. For some people who experience trauma they go on to develop mental health symptoms of disturbing memories of the event(s), feeling like they cannot relax, avoiding things that remind them of the trauma, nightmares, insomnia, irritability, anxiety, out of context reactions to smaller stressors. These are all symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It is not uncommon for people who have PTSD to make themselves feel better through using substances like alcohol or cannabis. They may also isolate themselves from others, have unsatisfying relationships and plan their lives around avoiding exposure to “triggers.”
If you have PTSD there are medications that can help you feel better. EMDR can help you develop a different relationship with your memories so that you can get on with your life and no longer be held hostage by your past.
