How to Survive the Holidays
December is often a quiet month for psychiatric providers in Seattle, and elsewhere. Probably because people are out and about trying to make the most of the season. I notice that I can often get wrapped up in the hustle and bustle of the season. Making sure to attend the holiday parties, to buy or (shriek) make gifts, do some holiday baking and then there are the Christmas ships that I always meant to go see. I will share the advice that I like to give and try to follow myself.
-start each day with setting an intention, how do I want to be today? An example is, approach people with kindness, or, remain grounded
- make sure to notice the small things
- make sure to eat balanced meals at the ‘normal times’.
- excercise
- if there are holiday traditions, such as baking or cooking, see if they can be approached from a place of enjoyment as opposed to obligation. If it feels like obligation I ask myself, who am I doing this for? Do I need to do this?
- at the end of the day take a moment or two to practice gratitude, think of one thing that I am thankful for, hold it close
I hope that everyone has a wonderful holiday and we are here at Liquid Sunshine Psychiatric Services in Seattle, WA whenever you are ready.
